Born in San Jose, California, the IFBB pro bodybuilder An Nguyen turned professional at the age of 26 but has been a sports enthusiast all his life and has most recently excelled in the bodybuilding industry as one of the best conditioned in a range of top competitions.
Nguyen grew up in California with 1 brother and 3 sisters, he is second generation Vietnamese and quickly became keen on American sports at high school such as football and wrestling where he quickly realised the importance of bulking up and getting stronger.
Nguyen started competing when he was 19 and then moved to Fresno to start his degree. Starting competitions in 2005, Nguyen took on various bodybuilding contests including:
In 2011 he then went on to compete in the NPC National Championships where he came first and earned his IFBB Pro Card. Since then, Nguyen has competed in 5 contests and placed between 3rd and 11th in each of them.
Nguyen has often said that his family are his motivation to work hard and succeed in bodybuilding. With a supportive wife and children, he works hard to provide for them and they are his inspiration to push himself even further to his limit every time.
When An was younger, he particularly admired bodybuilding legends such as Flex Wheeler, Shawn Ray, and Kevin Levrone who inspired him to build himself even more and create that desirable athletic look. He also always talks about his constant support from his fans, all of whom have been there to encourage him from the start and will ultimately give him the motivation he needs to be the best.
An loves to train his chest, and when he first started training to build his muscle he began with many push ups. Although he his famous for his very defined back and chest muscles, he often feels that the needs to work on those the most and that he still has a lot of room for improvement.
Prior to his win at the NPC National Championships in 2011, An said that he had worked harder than ever to reach his best possible conditioning. Before the USA championships he had already dieted for 16 weeks, took 4 weeks off and then did an intense 12 weeks of dieting and training to get back to his optimum weight and appearance.
An Nguyen is only 28 years old, and for one of the younger members of the bodybuilding sport, he still has many things to add to his list of achievements. If he keeps doing as well as he has done so far, he’s sure to be a world champion in no time.
